An Opponauts in tbe NoVa area, if you know of any tech or other non-sales jobs available, let me know. I'm getting close to the start of my 60 days and would very much so not have to cut it any closer than I have to.

Ideal would be IT. I'm currently in software sales, and have way too many problems with sales to keep doing it. But I've built up so much tech experience there that I feel like I could easily slide into a Jr/entry Tech position easily. I was going to transfer to our tech team till a bad team member and the merger fucked me.

Hmm, alright. I'm in the Army but I work with a bunch of IT people, when they get back in I'll ask who their contracting company is and if they are hiring. Even if you don't have any certs, it shouldn't be too big of a problem. One of the guys I work pretty close with got hired on as a desktop support tech and had no certs/schooling when he got hired.

Auto related marketing you say? I'm good for that. My wife and I don't have kids yet, so we're pretty open to moving at this point.

No certs unfortunately, but I do have the schooling, and going on a year at Dell. Hopefully that'll open some ears haha.

Certs is a definite plus, but not absolutely necessary for a starter IT position, but experience speaks volumes as well, working at Dell, if you have a good recommendation from there as well, very good chance you could get hired on as a desktop support tech. As one of the bosses here had said, if you get A+, Net+ and Windows 7, along with some experience you definitely have a job. And if you want, since you live in the same area as me, I could let you borrow the materials for all of those tests as well. I'm actually working on going to take the Windows 7 test next week, I've got everything you would need to study for it.

Well, for references, I have a letter of recommendation from my RM saying how often he asks me about the technology because of my grasp on it. I also have half the Tech team to back me up, because they're mad my transfer got botched as well.
I'd love to take the certs, and have no problem getting them with the material and a couple weeks. Is that something I would need to get pre-hire, or as a must obtain type of thing? Either way, I definitely appreciate you letting me use the materials!

Some jobs would require you to have some of those certs, but from what I've seen with the civilians working with me their contracting company does not, I've had IT guys tell me when they hire people, they usually ask them questions pertaining to IT stuff, so it's not so much what is on paper but whats in your head. But it would be in your best interest to get them, because they will pay you more. I've got all the books for A+/net+/W7, but the more important things are the practice tests. Where people get screwed on the tests is, they were just studying the books and knowing the subject matter better, which isn't bad, but you need to study for the actual tests as well, because those microsoft and comptia tests are a major pain. To put it into perspective, I do desktop support stuff, I passed my Security+ exam on the first try, passed A+ 701, but failed A+ 702. The way they do the questions make them ridiculously hard.
But anyways, if you want the materials whenever, just email me or look me up on facebook

Here's a suggestion: look at tech staffing companies. There's so much tech contracting in the DC area, there's always a need for technical recruiters around there. A lot of them hire recruiters at the entry level. So you could leverage some of your knowledge developed in your current job to move into a different function. There's a certain amount of similarities with being in sales but it might be enough of a change for you.
Some of the companies that come to mind are Teksystems, Kforce, Adecco, Manpower, and any number of other local/regional staffing companies.
Some ideas to get you started....

Thanks man, I'll email you tonight after I run your piece. I'll be doing a bunch of home computer work then anyway, so might as well. Office computers aren't the safest thing to do that on...

Alrighty sounds good.
And yeah, I actually found a computer last night at work that has malware that continuously cycles with writing 1's and 0's to eat up the free space on the hard drive. Pretty interesting it's the first time I've seen it.

That's really strange. It always boggles my mind why people do things like that. I mean, I understand identity stealing software and those kinds of things. Those people are just modern thieves. But things like that that just eat up storage? Someone is just maliciously bored at that point.
Also, were you able to get any opening or job information out of your guys?

In addition to the Teksystems/Adeccos/etc. make sure you look at the big contracting shops like SAIC, Lockheed, Booz Allen and smaller ones like Indus and SRA - they're always trying to fill help desk and analyst jobs.

I'm an IT guy who just happens to be an Army contractor and from my experience, they hired me on, and then I had 45 days to get the certs. (I did it, by the way.)
I agree on the CompTIA tests being rough, though. I've got to retake the second of the Linux+ exams (personal development, not work-related) because I missed it by one question. :(
BugEyedAcura, since you're already on the inside, you may want to look at a Dell Services Federal Government position or two. Most of them are in undesirable locations like Fairfax or DC, but...
If you have any questions, you can always contact me here .

Hmm, alright then, I know that they would eventually want you to take the tests, just didn't know when.
Yeah, I remember I took my 702 A+ test, I think I missed it by 3 questions, it was depressing.
Would you mind if I added you? I'm looking at starting to build a network of people I can contact for when I get out of the Army for looking for jobs, or know how, that sort of thing.
